April 12, 2021 Re: Support for Council Bill 04-2021, Tobacco Retail Licensing Dear Mayor Starker and Wheat Ridge City Council Members: Thank you very much for your dedication to tobacco prevention in Wheat Ridge. I strongly support the measures put forth in Council Bill 04-2021 to establish a tobacco retail licensing program and raising the age of tobacco sales to 21 in alignment with federal and state law changes. Additionally, your decisions to ensure that the policy is comprehensive and includes all tobacco retailers regardless of the types of tobacco products sold, compliance checks twice a year with monitoring of underage sales, and instituting 1,000-foot distance restrictions on new tobacco retail licenses near schools and youth-oriented facilities are commendable. As you know, these distance restrictions are critical for reducing youth exposure to tobacco products in part because of the tobacco industry’s long history of targeting young people with its advertising and marketing. Thank you for putting forward such a comprehensive and evidence-based ordinance that is unquestionably in the best interest of the youth of our community. Strong local tobacco policy is more important than ever to decrease use of tobacco products by youth as they deal with current academic and social challenges. Your ongoing concern for the well-being of our youth and indeed all residents of our community is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Lorrie Odom, MD Co-Chair, Tobacco Free Jeffco Alliance Chair, Jeffco PTA Health, Wellness, & Safety
